Base Grillage Fabrication

The Challenge

JBS was tasked with fabricating a critical base grillage for client WellGear Ltd’s Crux HWU007 project.

The grillage design needed to be of a spec that would support the stair box and tension box assembly of a bespoke hydraulic workover unit (HWU) being utilised for the project.

The Solution

The scope of work encompassed:

• Material procurement of certified steel
• Precise fabrication, including cutting, bevelling and welding by qualified personnel
• Rigorous non-destructive testing (NDT)

Dimensional control was meticulously maintained throughout the assembly process.

More than that, JBS fabricated a dedicated housing within the grillage base to accommodate a quick make-up torque (QMAT) unit, free issued by the client for trial fitment purposes. This required exceptional accuracy to ensure seamless integration.

The completed grillage underwent surface preparation and the application of a protective coating system suitable for the offshore environment. Comprehensive documentation, including material certificates, welding records and NDT reports, was compiled.

The fabrication was executed to the stringent requirements of DNV 2.7.3 operational class R30, demonstrating structural integrity and safety for offshore operations.
 

Conclusion

The grillage was prepared for and successfully passed load testing witnessed by a third-party certification body, leading to the DNV 2.7.3 R30 certification.

This partnership facilitated a thorough understanding of the design requirements and ensured a seamless fabrication process.
